Straight 8

The Straight8 competition is for individuals or groups of filmmakers to compete, blind, and totally creatively. It all began in London in 1999 and is now a global filmmaking challenge every filmmaker should try…

Production Company - Ecstasy of Gold

Director / DOP - Arthur Lewin

Creative - Ella Tomlin Kedge

Producer / Talent - Lucy Benson-Brown

Camera - Lloyd Cook

Stills - Mel Brown

Talent - Danny Rahim

You have to shoot the whole film on one reel, no editing and you have to put the music with it, essentially blind. If you do well, the first time you will see your finished product is on the big screen!

This year, we worked with Ecstasy of Gold on a short film about two people who found each other on a dating app. Simple and clean layered with rhetoric and subtext, innuendoes and emotion.

Do you want to know more? Ask yourself these questions:

  • can you make a great film on just one roll of super 8mm?

  • with no re-takes, no editing, no grade, no post-production at all

  • you make all your final visuals only with each pull of your camera's trigger

  • you can’t cheat because we process your film for you

  • you even make your soundtrack ‘blind’ and we line it up to the first frame of picture

  • the first time even you see your own film is when the audience does, if it's good enough to be selected*

straight 8 is open to anyone anywhere who’s brave enough to try it. So, if you have a straight 8 in you, are you brave enough to compete?
